March 22 - the Asheville Bellydance Technique Smackdown with Zi'ah Ali
Hey folks,
Join us for some SouthEastern Bellydance Community-building fun, with
the Bellydance Technique Smackdown
with Zi'ah Ali of Awalim Dance Company (Atlanta, GA)
Saturday, March 22
Asheville, NC

So you think you can bellydance?
Join Zi'ah Ali, Director of award-winning TribalCon and Awalim Dance Company, for an intense day in the studio. Workshoppers make a verbal agreement at the beginning of class and then work to make it reality -
Flawless isolations? Beautiful zils? Intricate footwork? Yes? Yes. YES!

Committed to perpetuating bellydance in its pure, expressive and artistic form, Zi'ah will have us quivering with enthusiasm and exertion.
A great resource to take your dance practice to the next level.

The workshop will be followed by a delightful evening of performance and world music at the BoBo Gallery in Ultra-Hip downtown Asheville. After the show, DJ Pop n Lock Aleikum (aka August of The Mezmer Society) will be spinning insane and festive tunes for the fan of Indonesian HipHop and Eastern European swing.

The Workshop is at the Movement & Learning Center
90 Biltmore Ave, Asheville NC 28801
Registration at 10:30am.
Classes are 11am-1pm & 2-4pm
$75
Bring finger cymbals, shoes, water, a notebook & layers. Kneepads & a yoga mat are optional.

the Hafla is 8-10pm, followed by the crazy World Music DJ.
$10 at the door
BoBo Gallery,
Lexington Avenue, Asheville, NC, 28801.
The BoBo has both a wine bar & wholesome food.

Register at www.barakamundi.com or Paypal onca@barakamundi.com.
Call 828 232 2980 with questions.

OH AND ----

On April 5, award-winning Zafira Dance Company will be teaching and performing over the hill in Knoxville. In the spirit of generating bellydance community, we have arranged a bulk rate. Folks pre-registering for both at once enjoy the amazing rate of $120.

Jim Boz is coming to Huntsville, AL!!!!!!! The Beledi Club of Huntsville will host the wonderful Boz July 18-20, 2008. All the details aren’t on the Beledi Club’s website yet, but here’s what we have so far:

•	Hafla Friday night either at the hotel of choice or The Studio … possibly wandering to my favorite local gay bar just to amuse Jim and show him off to my friends there.
•	Four hours of classes with Jim on Saturday that will be decided upon at the Club’s January meeting. Check out Beledi Club of Huntsville’s Tribe for a listing of what our options are. http://tribes.tribe.net/belediclub and to keep up to date on our progress with planning this event.
•	A few specially chosen vendors … we have invited Faye and Bipin (who just so happen to be friends of Jim’s), plus Linda (local Beledi Club Member) and Belilah (Beledi Club member) who will be selling Eye Kandy!
•	Show Saturday night at the American Legion which will be a benefit for the local ASPCA, a charity near and dear to the Bozman’s heart. There will be a cash bar and a simple menu available to order from (things like burgers, chicken fingers, fries, pizza, etc). We’re considering having a silent auction or something of the sort to help get money for the ASPCA. The Legion gives us this location for free since we do charity shows, so big kudos to them. Tickets to the show will be $10 each or included in your price if you pay for the workshop by the Early Bird deadline (June 1). Performers aren’t expected to pay for the show, but are asked to make a $5 charitable donation.
•	Three hours of classes on Sunday will be a bit more advanced than that offered on Saturday, but not beyond anyone who survives the previous 4 hours with Jim.
•	Prices are going to be great! The Early Bird Price offered is $125 if paid for by June first. This includes your ticket to the show and 7 hours of class with Jim. After June 1st, the price changes to $150. A single day of classes will be $75 if paid for before June 1st or $80 at the door.
•	We’re working on getting pricing for hotel rooms, but that’s still in the works …
•	Put this one on your calendar – you’ll kick yourself if you miss it!!!!!

This Saturday at The Studio in Huntsville, Alabama, The Naughties are sponsoring a henna workshop with Heather Foster. Heather is an amazing henna artist who originally did the design I have on the back of my neck in the palm of my hand in henna. I fell in love with it and had to make it part of me permanently, so this explains why I am so crazy about her. Plus, she's an amazingly cool chickie/dancer/friend! Heather will be at The Studio from 1-4pm teaching the history, safety, and application of henna with an after party for video watching! You will receive 2 cones of henna (one for playing in class & another for taking home to get more practice), handouts of designs & how-to instructions to help you remember the stuff she teaches, and a design of your choice from the sheets she brings done on your hand all for just $25 prepaid or $30 at the door. If you want more henna work done, Heather will be available after the class to do more work during the video/dance hafla. Also, Heather will have extra cones for sale to those of you who just can't wait to henna everyone in the house (be nice to your animals!). The hafla is to be potluck, so bring along any munchies you want to share and/or pillows for lounging while watching the videos. Bring any interesting videos of shows you'd like to share with us. It's going to be loads of fun -- hope to see you there!

The workshop wil be held at The Studio located at 1219 C Jordan Lane which is on the corner of Jordan Lane and Commercial Drive in the Penny Plaza across from Chuck E. Cheese. That Saturday will be partnering choreography and Sunday will be partnering with floorwork. Each day will offer 3 hours of classes starting at 11am with an hour for lunch starting at 12:30. Don't miss this one --- getting these chickies here from New Jersey is NOT an easy task! And while you're here you can attend the Third Annual Shahala's Toys for Tots Show which Kassar will be performing in. Come on and join us --- you could even be in the show and be able to claim that you danced on the same stage as Kassar! The price is only $75 for both days or $40 for one day as long as you pay before the day of the workshop. It will be $90 at the door for both days or $45 for one day. That's a great price for these two gloriously wonderful dance teachers!

ABOUT PETITE JAMILLA:
Bellydance Superstars youngest member Petite Jamilla, as pictured on the cover of “Live at the Follies Bergere” DVD has been touring with the Bellydance Superstars since January of 2004. Performing the celestial and inspiring double veil as a featured part of the show, is just a fraction of what this talented dancer has to offer. Since she was 17, Petite Jamilla has been teaching workshops that range from Zill Techniques with Modern Incorporations, Choreographed Fusion Drum Solo’s, and Spinning Introductions with Double Veil “How To’s.” By the age of 20, she had produced 2 instructional DVD’s [Beginner’s Dance Movements, and Secrets of the Double Veil] available for purchase through www.bohemianmarket.com. Cross-Cultural Fusions are a passionate focus for this dancer as her Irish/Native American ethnicity became the incentive to further explore and push the boundaries of fusion in dance. With training in Bellydance (taught by her mother, Jamilla Rasa), Polynesian, Scottish Highland, Modern Irish, and Cape Breton Step Dancing her unique blend began an unclassifiable style. Dually equipped as a classically trained musician in Western style compositions and Scottish/Irish blends - it was, of all things, the Highland Bagpipes that showcased Petite Jamilla’s talent for the critically acclaimed Rod Stewart in February of 2000.

DANCERS... please see below for details as there have been some changes/updates.
Details for the Finals contest are also below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*****A note and Special offer from Linda for Participants*****
Just to make it official and correct any misunderstanding, I am not a judge for the contest. I choose the judges, which may include my students (who all take from other teachers as well), and avid dance fans who represent a non-dancer’s view.
On that note...

I am offering $10 off every hour of private instruction for participants in an upcoming contest.
Regular hour of private lessons: $35 discounted price: $25
This is valid for the rest of this series. The dancer must be competing in the next available contest which includes the finals.

I support dancers in every style to further their artistry and to give themselves the training they deserve. I encourage you all to take private instruction with a qualified teacher (especially a professional performer) as it is the most diligent way of improving your dance.

In the spirit of the dance,
-Linda-

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to the overwhelming popularity of these events, you MUST MAKE A RESERVATION!!!!
Call 615-255-4448.

Out of respect for one another and to enhance your service, there are some policies on reservations for this evening:

You are not guaranteed a seat unless you make a reservation.
No standing room or bar area.
Walk-ins most likely will not get a table due to limited staffing.
Only 1-3 reservations in any 15 minute segment will be accepted.
therefore, your reservation may have to be earlier or later than the contest time.
It is requested, though by means required, that you make reservations for 4 or more guests.
First come, first serve on reservation times. No preference to Dancer's family and friends.
Your entire party must be present before you are seated.
Late arrivals: If no one has shown up from your party within 10 minutes of your scheduled time you may have to wait or not be seated.
Each person must order an entrée or dollar amount equivalent.

Thank you for your understanding.

There will be (really, really this time) a limited menu with vegetarian options. There will still be a variety of appetizers, kabobs, stews, and desserts as well as the full drink menu.

PARISA’S:
Located at 2424 Nolensville Pike, Nashville, TN 37211 in the WOODBINE PLAZA just one light from I440.
LOOK FOR THE WOODBINE PLAZA SIGN!
Call 615-255-4448 for reservations and directions.

Details for Monthly Semifinals:

Special note... Out of town dancers are very welcome to participate!
Also, anyone who has been chosen as a semifinalist is welcome to open the professional Friday show which usually features Linda. This is to offer you more experience at the restaurant and in a professional setting. Speak with Linda if you are interested. This includes the 3 dancers from the January show.
Any professional dancer who wishes to do an exhibition at an amateur night, please contact Linda.
Amateur is defined as a Belly Dancer who has rarely or never been paid for performances. This may include teachers with limited performance experience or dancers that have had up to 4 paid gigs.
Dancers must contact Linda to register.
Monthly contest first prize: $50.00 plus any tips she/he receives (see below)
Panel of Belly Dancers and non-dancers decides semi-finalists,
Audience decides finalist.
Limit 5-10 dancer entries.
This event will be postponed or canceled if we do not have 5 dancers registered by the Tuesday before the event.
Songs or song sets must be 3-7 minutes long. Props welcome, no fire or snakes please.
All styles, ages, and amateur experience levels welcome.
Soloists only.
Original choreography/ improvisation encouraged.
No entry fee.
Dancers must be in Belly Dance costuming. This does not have to be professional quality, but appropriate costuming is required. Contact Linda if you have questions about this.
Please only compete if you have taken Belly Dance training. This does not include videos. Videos are a great practicing and learning tool. However, the purpose of these contests is to raise the bar on the level of professionalism for our amateur dancers.
Dancers must maintain class and modesty at all times.
we discourage tipping in costumes at these events, audience may tip at the dancer’s feet, in the form of a shower over the head or in the hand after she dances. An employee will collect the tips from the floor when the dancer is done.
Dancer Check in at 6:45

Contact Linda to register and secure your song title, or if you have any questions.

Many of the world's greatest achievements in art, architecture, science, technology and culture are unveiled there, everything from the finest Victorian paintings to the belly dancing of Little Egypt.

Hello everyone!

I must say....I am totally blown away by the response to this weekends show and workshop! I think it was a obvious success and I'm very happy with how incredibly helpful the workshop was and how well received the show was!

My goal in putting together this show/workshop was based on past experiences with going to workshops and performing at the shows! I want to offer an alternative to the standard way of doing workshops:

My goals with the workshops are the following:

1. Have the Show the night before instead of the night of the workshop! I hate going and dancing all day long...not being able to completely focus on what I was attempting to learn because of the stress and distraction of the looming performance: Trying to grab a bite to eat...take a moment to rest, getting motivated to putting on the costume and trying to put on the "performance face". It's really hard!

2. Offer focused workshops on helping to develop technique and discipline with your dance studies, as well as workshops that are informational about Middle Eastern Culture, choosing appropriate music, specific cultural dances. etc. I personally don't care to learn someone elses choreography. (But that's just me). I would rather focus on the elements that will help me to improve my dance.

3. Catered Lunch: The one thing that will change next workshop will be instead of having to leave for lunch...we will offer a select menu and then include the price for lunch in the workshop cost and have the food delivered. I feel this would be most helpful in letting folks shop, visit, take it easy instead of having to rush to eat, deal with traffic, directions, indigestion, etc. So expect that for the next workshop!

4. Discount to Perfomers: Let's face it...we put on a great show and we don't get paid for it...we don't even get a discount on the workshop! Well...I will be offering a 25% discount on the cost of the workshop for performing groups. This is to help with the cost of your travels!

5. A Meet and Greet Reception following the Workshop: No Stress, No performances...just hanging out with other dancers, eating, talking, watching dance videos, comparing notes, etc.

6. I am starting a Southeastern American Bellydance and Music Association! This community will promote growth, an exchange of new ideas, be inclusive rather than exclusive of all forms of bellydance, offer focused workshops based on improving technique rather than the focus being on style, offer Rhythm and Movement Workshops to help dancers to understand the rhythms that they dance to, and also allowing it's members to make suggestions that will help with all of the above efforts! Promoting the Bellydance Community here in the South! Offering workshop discounts to members of SABMA when attending workshops. (In the works...as we speak!)

I think the performances were a great success! Everyone did a fantastic job...Sincere gratitude goes out to our friends from the North! both Masmoudi and Alchemy! Fantastic Job guys! and I would also like to thank my student tribe - Tribe Altani for their help, positive energy and effort not only at the show but also at the workshop! My fees are not posted. The other dancer's fees are. I have a day job, the other dancer depends on dancing for her income. Should I raise my fee by the $5 to show solidarity or leave it as is? The reason I ask this is: I am not sure whether the new patron knows other previous clientelle who paid the lower fee. However, I have not danced for them in several months. My most recent gigs have been charity affairs for which I donated my time. My hesitation is that if I charged a lower fee to one group and then a higher fee to this person...I don't want to seem as if I'm ripping anyone off. Then again, I do want to be supportive of the other dancer who is more dependent on dance income. As I say, I have a day job..... Any suggestions?....Becky

WHAT IS THE AMERICAN REDCROSS DOING TO HELP VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA?

Since the disaster hit, the American Red Cross has been on the scene to help victims. To Date we have opened more than 902 Red Cross shelters in 24 states that have housed more than 204,270 people, and we have served more than 11 million hot meals. Currently we are making it possible for 140,374 people who are running out of personal resources to remain in hotels in 46 states. The American Red Cross has mobilized its nationwide network of more than 850 chapters to support this effort. More than 122,000 disaster relief workers from 50 states, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C. and the Virgin Islands are supporting this unprecedented relief operation. The American Red Cross is currently undergoing a massive mobilization effort to deploy existing Red Cross volunteers and train new ones for future deployment. For more information on this effort, please visit www.sacsierraredcross.org.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Our major need right now is financial contributions. We expect this to be one of the most expensive disasters in American Red Cross history, and we need the support of the American people to provide Red Cross relief to victims. You can make a donation online at www.sacsierraredcross.org, via phone at 1-800-HELP NOW or by mail with a check made out to “American Red Cross,” 8928 Volunteer Lane, Ste. #100, Sacramento, CA 95826.

WHO SHOULD I CALL TO DO A FUNDRAISER?

Thank you for your interest. Our fund development department is coordinating all outside fundraisers. To get information on picking up donation cans or other fundraising activities, please contact that department directly at (916) 368-3123 or use our chapter main number (916)368-3131.

HOW CAN I MAKE SURE MY DONATION IS SPENT ON KATRINA?

Contributions to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund are best, because they allow us to spend money where it is needed most as new disasters occur. However, if you put “Hurricane Katrina” in the memo line of your check, we will ensure it is spent on this specific relief operation. We are committed to honoring the intent of our donors, so if you prefer to designate your contribution for a specific purpose, please be sure to let us know!

ARE YOU TAKING DONATIONS OF ITEMS?

Thank you for your inquiry. While we appreciate your desire to help, the American Red Cross is not able to accept donations of physical items like clothing, blankets or food. We have found that the cost to collect, ship and warehouse these items often outweighs the value of the items themselves. Financial donations are best because they allow us to purchase EXACTLY what’s needed and get it to people quickly. We try to make these purchases as close to the affected region as possible, so there’s the added benefit of injecting money into the disaster-affected economy.

The American Red Cross is not taking donations of medical supplies or medications either prescription or over the counter. These supplies are best donated to organizations that have a mission of medical relief.

I WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER IN THE LOCAL OFFICE (SACRAMENTO, AUBURN, PLACERVILLE, SONORA). HOW DO I DO THAT?

The Sacramento Sierra chapter is still in need of volunteers to work in their local offices. These volunteers are needed to help with administrative support like answering phones, data entry or various other duties in our fund development department. If you are interested in helping locally in either, Sacramento, Auburn, Placerville or Sonora, please call the Sacramento Sierra Chapter at 916-368-3131.

ARE YOU RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS TO BE DEPLOYED TO EVACUATION SHELTERS?

We are actively recruiting volunteers to be deployed to the effected region. To do this, you must be in good health with no mobility limitations, and you must be able to commit to traveling on a “hardship” assignment (sleeping on a cot, with limited access to showers) for three weeks. As of right now, shelters have adequate staffing to support their mission. It is when these volunteers are finished with their assignments, which ranges anywhere from 10 to 21 days, that more volunteers will be needed to replace them. Also, please keep in mind, that this relief operation will last anywhere from six to 12 months. For more information on volunteer needs, please visit www.sacsierraredcross.org.

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO SUPPORT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS DISASTER RELIEF OPERATION FROM THE SACRAMENTO SIERRA CHAPTER?

Since Saturday the 27th of August our chapter has deployed 366 volunteers. We are looking forward to training and processing more volunteers in the future.

WHY IS DEPLOYMENT TAKING SO LONG?

We are currently deploying trained people to support the disaster relief effort for hurricane Katrina.
Our deployment numbers are at the request of our Service Area. When our Service Center sends our chapter a request for numbers of trained people to be deployed, our chapter then starts the process of finding volunteers with availabilities to match. Please keep in mind that this will be a long disaster relief operation, one that will possibly last from six months to a year.

ARE YOU GOING TO BE HAVING MORE TRAINING CLASSES?

We will be having more training classes in the days to come. Please keep in mind that this is a “hardship” assignment (sleeping on a cot, with limited access to showers) for three weeks. To be deployed to help, you need to have taken our training and must be in good health with no mobility limitations. The American Red Cross is currently staffed for the shelters that are open. It is when these volunteers are finished with their assignments, which ranges anywhere from 10 to 21 days, that more volunteers will be needed to replace them. Also, please keep in mind, that this relief operation will last anywhere from six to 12 months.
Please monitor www.sacsierraredcross.org for updates on dates and times.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH EVACUEES FROM THE HURRICANE KATRINA DISASTER AREA?

Any individuals/families that are self-evacuating to the Sacramento Area are eligible for services through the American Red Cross. The Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross is operating a service center in the Sacramento office. This is for the registration and assessment of self-evacuees. In order to receive services, self-evacuees, upon arrival to the Sacramento area, need to contact the Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross by phone at (916) 368-3131 or in person at 8928 Volunteer Lane, Sacramento. Please note that the service center hours vary from day to day . Please call to check on hours.

For people who are unable to visit a local chapter, the American Red Cross has opened up a call center. This center will interview and aid evacuees with the same guidelines as a chapter service center. The call center number is
1-800-975-7585. Please be aware that this number is very impacted and to please be patient with the process.

I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MY HOME TO DISPLACED EVACUEES, HOW DO I DO THAT?

Thank you for your generous offer to house evacuees displaced by hurricane Katrina. The American Red Cross
does not match evacuees with host families in unaffected areas. Please visit either www.sac.sheriff.com, or your local Salvation Army (Sacramento, 916-563-3700). These organizations are processing of this type of donation.

HOW DO I HELP WITH LOCAL EVACUATION SHELTERS?

It is unclear at this time if an evacuation shelter for hurricane Katrina evacuees will be located in our area.
If you want to participate in a local shelter, if one is located here, you will need to take the same 9 hour training class. We will be having more training classes in the days to come. Please monitor www.sacsierraredcross.org for updates on dates and times.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT A LOVED ONE IN THE HURRICANE-AFFECTED REGION?

The American Red Cross has launched a website to help assist family members who are seeking news about loved ones living in the path of Hurricane Katrina.

•	If you have internet access, please visit the “Family Links Registry” via www.redcross.org to register yourself, a missing relative or view the existing list of registrants.

•	Due to the extent of the damage and the number of people displaced, concerned friends and family members are encouraged to visit this site daily to consult the list, as it will be updated continuously.

•	Those who do not have access should call our toll-free hotline 1-877-LOVED-1S (1-877-568-3317)

I AM HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY CLIENT ASSISTANCE CARD (CAC).

If you are a hurricane Katrina evacuee and are having trouble with your:

* US Bank VISA Client Assistance Card that was issued to you at the Sacramento Sierra Red Cross., please call US Bank customer service at 1-877-693-2899.

* Red Cross CAC card, please come by the Red Cross office for assistance.
Please call 916-368-3131 to check the service center hours.

Hey everyone! I just want to thank you all again for a great Rhythm & Movement class this week! I hope you are all learning from it!

I wanted to let you all know that I spent some time yesterday in the studio recording audio files of the rhythms played on the doumbek for you all to practice to! Every week, I will upload the rhythm we will be learning to my Karachi Rocket website. Right now, I have uploaded Saidi and Beladi for you all to download. You can find these audio files here: http://karachirocket.net/classes.html. Next week I will upload, and we will learn, Maqsum.

I hope these are helpful in your practice! The purpose is to completely absorb these rhythms until they are completely internalized. You should be able to recognize and distinguish these rhythms and vocalize them using "doum-tek" vocalization. Once you have made some progress here, you can then comfortably begin translating what you hear
